Timothy, singer/songwriter in Brooklyn, NY:
"Over the years I’ve taken music lessons from a variety of teachers, but I’ve never been able to significantly improve my singing until I met Maria Neckam. I have some vocal ability, but too often I found myself missing notes and struggling with breath control. It wasn’t my attitude or work ethic; it was something I couldn’t identify. So I asked a few other musicians for advice.
One of them recommended Maria to me, and I’m glad he did.
My vocals improved quickly and markedly under Maria’s guidance, and the improvements gave me a sense of command I hadn’t had before.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Maria to anyone looking to improve their singing. Her friendly attitude and clear communication make all the difference.”

Frequently asked questions
Is taking voice lessons worth it?
Now that’s a big, fat YES! An experienced singing teacher can hear the things you don’t and see the reasons why. Studying with a professional is your shortcut to progress and a more fulfilling experience with music.
Can you voice train yourself?
You’ll always be the one that needs to do the practicing, but trying to train yourself without any teacher’s input is a risky business. It’s very easy to develop bad technique, which lead to issues with your vocal cords and are very hard to un-train. Best to do it right from the outset and save yourself the trips to a voice doctor.
Is it too late for vocal training?
It’s never too late to train your voice! We use it every day (for speaking), so it’s always beneficial to work on using it better and more effectively. How long should you practice voice a day? Starting out at 30 minutes/day is great, and you can build that gradually. It’s best to be careful not to over-practice and to take breaks whenever the voice feels tired.
